SAN ANTONIO (AP) - A former bookkeeper for a South Texas district has been put on probation and must repay more than $14,000 for stealing from a school.
The San Antonio Express-News (https://bit.ly/1bWamb9 ) reports a judge on Tuesday sentenced 36-year-old Melissa Marie Martinez to 10 years of probation. Martinez, who worked for the Harlandale Independent School District in San Antonio, pleaded no contest to third-degree felony theft.
Prosecutors say Martinez stole from Kingsborough Middle School by writing checks to herself from September 2009 to August 2011. The money in the general fund was earmarked for several groups, including athletics, band, art and yearbook.
The scam surfaced when a vendor reported a $100 check had bounced.
The Texas Association of Public Schools, which provides insurance, reimbursed the district $24,000 for its losses.
