MADISON, Wis. (AP) - An anti-domestic abuse group is urging legislators to pass a bill that would establish a legal process for seizing firearms from people under restraining orders.
Current Wisconsin law requires people subject to domestic violence injunctions to surrender their firearms but doesn’t establish a formal process.
Rep. Garey Bies introduced a bill in October that would require the subject of a restraining order to document any guns he or she might possess. A judge would verify the information at a hearing and order the subject to surrender the firearms to the sheriff or a designated recipient.
End Domestic Violence Wisconsin held a news conference Wednesday urging Assembly Speaker Robin Vos to schedule a vote next week. A Vos spokeswoman didn’t immediately return a message.
