ATHENS, Ala. (AP) - Sheriff’s officials in north Alabama say a woman and her daughter were killed in an early morning house fire.

Limestone County Sheriff Mike Blakely says a fire early Wednesday morning tore through a house on Snake Road in Athens. Blakely told the Decatur Daily the victims have been identified as 76-year-old Josephine Ann Lamar and 43-year-old Traci Shook.

Blakely says Lamar’s son, Tommy, was in the basement of the house and found his mother unresponsive when ran upstairs. Blakely says the woman’s son was able to safely escape the house.

The cause of the fire is unclear.
