RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - The South Dakota Wildland Fire Division is exhorting burn permit holders to ensure that burned brush piles are extinguished.
The agency says the chances of a fire spreading will increase because of the milder temperatures expected to move through the region.
Burn permits are issued from Oct. 1 through Apr. 1st each winter. Weather and snow cover determine if permits are issued.
Jim Strain is the division’s chief of operations. He says his office has issued several burn permits within the last week.
Officials say the division has issued about 30,000 burn permits through its web-based permit program since 2005.
