CLOVIS, Calif. (AP) - A Northern California man has been sentenced to 10 months in prison for conspiring to buy, receive, alter and pass counterfeit money.
The Fresno Bee (https://bit.ly/1luQpuL ) cites court documents that show 44-year-old Richard Melella and a co-conspirator, 25-year-old Christina Williams, purchased 54 phony $100 bills from a third party.
Prosecutors say after being instructed by the seller on how to finish the counterfeiting process, Williams used a counterfeiting device to make the money look more authentic.
Some of the phony bills were used in Fresno County, including at a grocery store.
Melella, of Clovis, was sentenced Monday.
Williams, a Fresno resident, will be sentenced April 7.
