Alabama teacher accused of raping student

MILLBROOK, Ala. (AP) - A case involving a Millbrook high school teacher accused of rape is expected to be presented to a grand jury.

Millbrook police say Stanhope Elmore high school math teacher and track coach, Jeffrey Stanton, surrendered to authorities after a 17-year-old student accused him of raping her in his classroom.

Detective Kirk Pelham says the incident happened in May of 2013 but was reported last month. Stanton’s attorney, Richard White, says the allegations are false.

WAKA-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1eORhu9 ) prosecutors have interviewed the student and found text messages in the girl’s phone where the teacher asked her to send him photos.

The case is expected to go to a grand jury in April.
