HAMPTON, Va. (AP) - Hampton police are investigating the fatal shooting of a pit bull by a city officer.

Sgt. Jason Price tells media outlets that the pit bull charged at the officer.

Price says officers responding to a vicious dog report Monday morning found the pit bull tethered to a fence. Tethering is prohibited in Hampton, so they called animal control.

The dog freed itself when animal control officers arrived and charged at one of the officers.
