BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A 5th grade student at a Baton Rouge elementary school is in custody after an unloaded gun was found in the student’s book bag.
The East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff’s office says authorities at Wedgewood Elementary received an anonymous tip that a student had a weapon about 1 p.m. Monday. The unloaded, .45-caliber weapon was later discovered in the 12-year-old boy’s book sack.
The boy faces charges of illegal possession of a firearm on a school campus. Authorities say no threats were made, and the student said he brought the weapon to school to be “cool.”
Investigators say the child took the weapon from a relative’s house.
