ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York’s inspector general says weak financial controls over a fund for crime victims allowed a state worker to put through two questionable claims for relatives.

Inspector General Catherine Leahy Scott says the probe of the Office of Victim Services found that an employee orchestrated a $500 payment to her sister for property losses and another for her daughter for $500.

The employee repaid the money and resigned.

The Office of Victim Services strengthened its procedures for reviewing claims as a result of the investigation.

The report recommends ensuring that all claims get reviewed by supervisors and the counsel’s office.

It also said extra scrutiny should be given to claims filed by staff and their relatives.
