SWISHER, Iowa (AP) - Swisher residents will vote Tuesday for the town’s next mayor.
The special election is being held to fill the seat left vacant on Nov. 11 by the sudden resignation of former Mayor Tim Mason. Former City Clerk Connie Meier also abruptly resigned the same day.
Neither Mason nor Meier has publicly said why they resigned, and city council members have also declined to address questions about the sudden resignations.
The resignations came days after the election of three new members of the five-member City Council.
Neither Mason nor Meier could be reached Saturday for comment.
“I think it’s important that we sort of move past the whole mayor and clerk resigning thing,” mayoral candidate Chris Taylor told the Iowa City Press-Citizen (https://icp-c.com/1i3RI1J ). “I would like to see things get back to usual with the understanding that we can also learn from it.”
Taylor is running against Randy Hurlbert for the post.
Hurlbert did not return messages left by the newspaper seeking comment, and he could not be reached Saturday by The Associated Press.
Johnson County Auditor Travis Weipert said he anticipates a substantial turnout at the polls Tuesday in the town of about 600.
About 24 percent of Swisher voters cast ballots in the November city election.
