CENTERVILLE, Ind. (AP) - A gas leak in an eastern Indiana town that forced the late-night evacuation of several homes came two weeks after local officials received training in how to deal with such leaks.

Centerville Town Council President Dan Wandersee says the emergency gas leak training city employees, police and firefighters had received really paid off.

After reports spread late Friday night of a strong natural gas smell along Centerville’s main drag of U.S. 40, emergency personnel evacuated several homes along the highway and adjacent streets. The evacuated residents were allowed to return home Saturday morning.

Vectren spokeswoman Chase Kelley tells the Palladium-Item (https://pinews.co/1fxfqmI ) the gas leak was isolated by 3 a.m. Saturday and was caused by a broken flange on a gas valve that “had been frozen and thawed and cracked.”
