PATERSON, N.J. (AP) - A pit bull was shot and wounded when it charged at officers during a raid on a northern New Jersey home that allegedly was being used by a drug distribution ring.

Numerous drug distribution charges were filed against four men found in the Paterson home on Friday, while two women who allegedly were there to buy drugs were also arrested.

The Passaic County Sheriff’s Office says the home had video surveillance cameras and layers of heavy-duty deadbolts and locks on the doors.

Authorities say two dogs were in the home when officers arrived, and someone inside the residence set the pit bull on them. The animal was shot once by an officer to stop the attack.

The dog was being treated by a veterinarian and was expected to recover.
