SAGINAW, Mich. (AP) - Delta College students have painted murals at Loomis Math, Science and Technology Academy in Saginaw to encourage youngsters there to be kind to others.
The idea resulted when Charles Sledge, 45, vice president of the Students Empowering Opportunities Club at Delta, approached club advisers about doing a project in the community. They decided to paint positive pictures and phrases on the elementary school’s gymnasium walls.
“The Film Club, Peace Club and Citizens in Action Club all came together to help with the idea of the mural,” Sledge told The Saginaw News ( https://bit.ly/MgK6yh ).
Sledge, who received an associate degree in arts, is now enrolled in Delta program at Ferris State University. He lives in the Loomis school neighborhood.
School Principal Sherie Turner-Daniel said the project fit with what the school calls its Bucket Filler Pledge: “I promise to do my best every day to be a bucket filler, not a (bucket dipper), and to use my lid for myself and others at home, at school, and everywhere I go.”
That philosophy affects everyone in the school, she said.
“If you choose to fill, you make them feel good and make yourself feel good about being nice and kind,” she told the newspaper.
About a dozen Loomis students were chosen to help paint the mural, including sixth-grader Jasmin Brookins, 12, who is new to the school.
“I like it here,” Jasmin said. “I like this project. I love painting.”
The mural project led to the startup of a Loomis technology club, with Charlie Drake of Delta College’s Film Club teaching youngsters how to make a short film.
“Anything to give back is a plus in my book,” Drake said.
Turner-Daniel said she appreciates the efforts.
“Delta has been instrumental in their follow through,” she said. “They have been committed to this project.”
