Berkeley County, South Carolina, sheriff Wayne Dewitt is facing DUI and other charges after leaving the scene of an accident and failing a field sobriety test, reports ABCNews4.

South Carolina Highway Patrol told ABCNews4 that Sheriff Dewitt was driving his county-owned truck early Sunday morning when he crashed into another vehicle and fled the scene.

Police found Sheriff Dewitt at his home where he failed a field sobriety test, and was arrested after officers confirmed that he had been driving his truck at the time of the accident, the news website reported.

Sheriff Dewitt was taken to a detention center where he refused a Breathalyzer test, resulting in an automatic six-month suspension of his driver’s license. He was released Sunday evening on bond, ABCNews4 reported.

Sheriff Dewitt has been sheriff of Berkeley County since 1995.
