Steve Carell movie set in North Korea canceled by New Regency

New Regency has reportedly pulled the plug on its Steve Carell movie “Pyongyang,” after Sony decided to cancel it’s Christmas Day premiere of “The Interview” due to North Korean hackers threatening a 9/11-style attack.

Director Gore Verbinski had been prepping for a March start date, a source familiar with the project told TheWrap.

The psychological thriller, written by Steve Conrad, was to take place in North Korea’s capital. It was based on the graphic novel by Guy Delisle, “Pyongyang,” about a Westerner’s experiences working in the despotic nation for a year, TheWrap reported.

Deadline’s Mike Fleming, Jr. reported: “Insiders tell me that under the current circumstances, it just makes no sense to move forward. The location won’t be transplanted.”
