PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A 125-foot schooner is coming through Portland - not by sea, but by land.

A trailer will pull the Spirit of Massachusetts schooner down Commercial Street to the Portland Yacht Services shipyard on Wednesday morning to begin a restoration project. The ship’s owners said the schooner will travel about a quarter of a mile between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. Owners said the journey is unlikely to significantly impact local traffic.

The schooner is expected to travel under the Casco Bay Bridge and then across a large open expanse.

The 30-year-old ship is one of three traditional schooners owned by Ocean Classroom Foundation. A spokesman for the foundation said the ship has served as a classroom for about 30,000 students and has traveled more than 300,000 sea miles.
