WOODVILLE, Miss. (AP) - A landslide in northern Wilkinson County has closed a mile of the northbound lane of U.S. Highway 61 indefinitely.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation rerouted northbound traffic Tuesday onto the southbound lane in a head-to-head format, changing the four-lane highway into a two-lane configuration.

District Engineer Albert White says stability issues deep in the soil caused the slide. He says crews were only able to make short term fixes.

Crews built temporary change lanes between the northbound and southbound lanes to allow for the traffic redirection

No injuries or damage to vehicles were reported following the slide.

White tells The Natchez Democrat (https://bit.ly/1k3EVz3 ) road crews are assessing the damage. He could not say when the road might reopen to four-lane traffic.
