BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A Madison County student is headed to Washington to represent Alabama in the national geography bee.

Christian Gonzalez of Harvest won the state-level Geographic Bee, which was held at Samford University in metro Birmingham.

To win, Gonzalez correctly answered “Kara” as the name of the sea in the Arctic Ocean that separates the Taymyr Peninsula from the Novaya Zemlya Archipelago.

Gonzalez is home-schooled. He won $100 and will also get an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington for the national competition, which will be held at the National Geographic Society beginning May 19.
