CHESAPEAKE, Va. (AP) - A new memorial in Chesapeake honors public safety workers who have died in the line of duty.
The Public Safety Memorial is five black stone columns containing the names of 18 fallen police officers, sheriff’s deputies and firefighters.
City officials held a dedication ceremony for the memorial on Tuesday.
Lt. Jeff Slone tells The Virginian-Pilot (https://bit.ly/1g6N707 ) that the project began around 2007. In 2008, public safety officials established a fund and began raising money.
Slone says $100,000 is needed to finish the project. Organizers want to add bronze statues of a police officer, sheriff’s deputy and firefighter to the memorial, along with a bronze city seal.
