NEW YORK (AP) - Authorities say eight seventh-grade middle school girls on Staten Island were treated by medical personnel after they drank an unknown liquid from a bottle that smelled of alcohol.

It happened at I.S. 61 on Castleton Avenue in the New Brighton section just after noon on Wednesday.

Schools spokeswoman Margie Feinberg says seven girls were taken to Richmond University Medical Center for observation. She said a guidance counselor and a teacher escorted the girls in the ambulance.

A fire department spokesman says an eighth student was treated at the scene.

Feinberg says the school is investigating and disciplinary action is pending.
