NORTHFIELD, Vt. (AP) - Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin and other senior state officials are heading to Northfield for a conference on the abuse of opiate drugs.

The session set for 4 p.m. Tuesday at Norwich University’s Plumley Armory will include keynote remarks by Shumlin and a panel of experts including Health Commissioner Dr. Harry Chen and Colonel Tom L’Esperance, the commander of the Vermont State Police.

What’s been described as a statewide epidemic of abuse of heroin and other opiates has been making national headlines since Shumlin focused on it in his State of the State address in January.

Tuesday’s even is being organized by the Calvin Coolidge Memorial Foundation.
