BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - North Dakota will pay a company $12,600 to clean up illegally dumped radioactive oil field waste found on the outskirts of the northwestern town of Noonan.
The Bismarck Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/1hohm4C ) that the money to pay Secure On-site Services will come from the state Industrial Commission’s abandoned well cleanup fund.
Officials about a month ago reported the illegal dumping of hundreds of radioactive oil filter socks in an abandoned building in Noonan. They said it’s the state’s biggest incident to date of illegal dumping of the tubular nets that strain liquids during the oil production process.
Authorities don’t know who’s to blame, and the whereabouts of the building’s owner aren’t known.
The cleanup company said it will dispose of the filter socks at a radioactive disposal facility in Idaho.
