IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - Officials in Iowa City are seeking ideas to redesign a popular park after flooding last summer left it strewn with sand and debris.

Iowa City Parks and Recreation Director Mike Moran said officials will request proposals this month for a redesign of City Park. They intend to hire a firm in May then have public input meetings this summer, the Iowa City Press-Citizen reported (https://icp-c.com/1mZKi22 ). Work on the project could begin this fall.

“We want them to go through and evaluate everything, and give us some recommendations on how to spruce it up and what we can bring to the park that’s different than what we have,” he said. “It will be just a fresh set of eyes.”

Moran said the city is not making any recommendations for specific changes in its request for proposals. They want to see what ideas the company and citizens will generate.

“We are not going to mandate anything or say you have to design this or you have to do that,” he said. “We’re just saying, ’Hey, let’s freshen the place up, and what recommendations do you make?’”

The city estimates it will spend at least $50,000 to hire a company for the project, which will be in conjunction with a project to raise a street and replace a bridge. Work on the park will carry a budget of at least $200,000 to $300,000.

In recent weeks, crews have hauled away sediment left after flooding last summer. The sand has been removed, and the park land along the river is being reseeded, the newspaper reported.
