MIDDLETOWN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - State Police say a driver was killed after his car hit a deer, causing him to strike a guardrail and then slam into a tree in the center median on the Garden State Parkway in Middletown.

Police say 59-year-old Joseph DiPadova of Neptune was pronounced dead three hours after the 5:44 a.m. crash on Tuesday. Police say he was trapped in the heavily damaged vehicle for several hours.

State Trooper Jeff Flynn tells the Asbury Park Press (https://on.app.com/1lIGVg5) investigators are looking at whether thick fog conditions Tuesday morning may have played a role.

Police say DiPadova had been driving his Acura TSX north in the express lanes when he struck the deer at mile post 112.5.

The closure of the northbound express lanes created a 13-mile traffic backup Tuesday morning.
