RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The dozens of Richmond hospitals that tended to the Civil War sick and wounded are being recognized with a state historical marker.

Many hospitals were housed in converted churches, warehouses and hotels during the war. The best known was Chimborazo Hospital, which was established in 1861 in the city’s Church Hill section.

The marker will be dedicated Saturday at Chimborazo Medical Museum. Speakers will include Edward L. Ayers, president of the University of Richmond and one of the nation’s top Civil War scholars.

The marker was approved by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources. The dedication ceremony is being hosted by the Richmond National Battlefield Park.
