MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Gov. Peter Shumlin has appointed Tommy Walz of Barre to fill the Vermont House seat left vacant by the recent resignation of Rep. Tess Taylor.

Walz, a Democrat, is a former teacher of English and German at Spaulding High School in Barre who worked more recently in computer sales and data consulting and is now retired.

Walz serves on the Barre Supervisory Union Board and the Spaulding High School Board. He also volunteers as a judge for the Vermont High School Debate Tournament.

Taylor resigned her House seat last month to work for a health care advocacy group.
