LELAND, Ill. (AP) - A group of northern Illinois farmers have gathered to mark the start of planting season with a tractor blessing.

The Daily Chronicle reports (https://bit.ly/1jVN2O6) that the ceremony happened Sunday morning at a church in the village of Leland. Suydam United Methodist Church pastor the Rev. Jodeen Immer blessed farmers with soil, seeds and water. It the fifth year the church has hosted the special service.

Immer called the farmers the “caretakers of the world.” She used an evergreen branch dipped in water to bless ten tractors in the church parking lot.



Farmer Mark Tuttle had his tractor blessed. He says farmers are praying for warmer weather after a frigid winter.

Leland has about 1,000 residents. It’s about 25 miles south of DeKalb.
