HAMMOND, La. (AP) - A federal judge overseeing Tangipahoa’s longstanding school desegregation case has OKd two capital projects sought by the parish School Board.
They include the addition of a carpool line for Hammond Westside Elementary at a cost of $300,000 and moving a portable building from the O.W. Dillon Elementary campus to Sumner High to aid the implementation of a band program.
Sumner High was the only public high school in the parish without a band program. It will cost roughly $13,000 to move and wire the portable building.
Under the desegregation orders, the school board must seek court approval for capital projects exceeding $125,000. However, The Daily Star reports (https://bit.ly/1hTjXCe ), attorneys for the board alerted U.S. District Judge Ivan Lemelle regarding the project out of an abundance of caution.
