INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A community group is hoping to turn a former coal yard in an Indianapolis neighborhood into an artsy development.

The Irvington Development Organization says it will use $500,000 city grant toward transforming the property near the Black Acre Brewing Co.’s new brewing facility.

Plans for the development in the Irvington neighborhood on the city’s east side include restaurants, retail, artisan food production and art.

The development will be named the Coal Factory in recognition of the site’s former use as a railroad coal yard.

Permission from the Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission is necessary for some zoning and exterior building improvements at the site.

The group plans for the Coal Factory to be completed by December.
