TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - A Tuscaloosa man has been sentenced to life in prison in the 2012 stabbing death of his blind aunt.

The Tuscaloosa News reports (https://bit.ly/1g1gTQn ) 37-year-old Kevin Demar Stines avoided the death penalty by pleading guilty Monday in the death of 55-year-old Gloria Martin.

Authorities have said Stines stabbed Martin in her chest before stealing cash and a rental car from her house in January of 2012.

Martin’s relatives have said Stines was released from prison on a robbery charge months before the stabbing, and Martin - who visited Stines in prison and sent him money - let him live with her after he was released.

Stines will not be eligible for parole.
