SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) - The U.S. Coast Guard has rescued three people from a burning boat off Southampton, Long Island.
Southampton Police tell Newsday (https://bit.ly/1jSXHsX ) they got a 911 call at about 2 p.m. Sunday that a fire had erupted in the cabin of a 36-foot motorboat which was traveling to Montauk.
The boat was fully engulfed in flames by the time a Coast Guard rescue vessel arrived at the site eight minutes later about one mile east of the Shinnecock Inlet.
The three boaters, whose names were not released, were plucked from a life raft by the Coast Guard and brought to shore where they were taken to a local hospital for treatment of mild hypothermia.
The vessel eventually sank. Authorities did not say what caused the fire.
