GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. (AP) - Officials say a woman has died after a fast-moving fire trapped her in her basement apartment in western NY.

Grand Island Fire Chief Matt Osinski tells media outlets the fire started around 9 p.m. Saturday in the victim’s basement apartment of the Grand Court Apartments in Grand Island. Police tried to get to her but were unable to get through the flames and smoke.

Residents of an apartment above the woman’s tell the Buffalo News (https://bit.ly/1fY615U ) they heard her scream for help, but they were unable to break through her steel-reinforced door.



The victim’s identity hasn’t been released yet.

Firefighters from several companies fought the flames in the six-unit, three-floor apartment complex.
