NEW CASSEL, N.Y. (AP) - Police say four young people holed up in a Long Island motel demanded ransom for a kidnapping victim authorities say was never kidnapped.
The four faced charges Sunday including attempted grand larceny.
Nassau County detectives say the two men and two women devised the scheme to call a family demanding $2,000 for the return of the victim.
On Saturday just after midnight, police entered a motel room in Hicksville where they found the four along with a bag containing drugs.
The men charged are 20-year-old Wendy Suprien, of New Cassel, and 20-year-old Wisard Dextra, of Westbury. The women charged are 28-year-old Scharday Hilton, of Huntington Station, and 19-year-old Sheyla Diaz, of the Bronx.
Police did not know whether they had an attorney.
