WEST HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) - Nassau County authorities say a cabbie drove off after hitting a car, but was followed by the other driver whose phone he stole during a 911 call.
Jeffrey Bernard, of Queens, faced charges including robbery, criminal mischief and leaving the scene of an accident.
Authorities say the 36-year-old cabbie pulled over on a nearby street after the accident in West Hempstead. The 18-year-old driver of the other vehicle followed him and was calling for help when police say Bernard grabbed the phone from his hand and again drove off.
Police say the teenager held on to the back of the taxi and was dragged a few blocks, injuring his elbow and leg.
The cabbie was arrested Saturday at his home. He was being arraigned Sunday in Hempstead.
