FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) - Fairbanks is getting a new low-power radio station that says it will try to include under-represented voices.
KWRK FM-LP received authorization from the Federal Communications Commission in February and plans to start broadcasting in early 2015. The new station’s range will be a four-mile radius around its studio, and it will stream online.
The FCC’s authorization stems from an eight-year effort by Fairbanks Open Radio, which split off from a National Public Radio-affiliate in 2006 after the station made programming changes.
KWRK says it will try to represent groups including poor people, gays, Native Americans, veterans, the young and the old.
Station volunteer Flyn Ludington tells the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner (https://bit.ly/OnZrhn ) that programming may include local music, radio dramas, talk shows and reading of public-domain books.
