PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) - A Jackson County inmate found hanging from a window bar in his cell is in critical condition at Singing River Hospital.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Cherie Ward tells The Sun-Herald (https://bit.ly/1gAgDqR ) that deputies making rounds at the jail just before midnight Friday found the inmate hanging. Ward says the inmate had a blanket around his neck.

Warren Strain with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, which is leading the investigation, declined to identify the inmate. But, he says, the inmate was being held on a murder charge.

Strain also declined to say if the hanging was a suspected suicide or homicide.
