ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico’s largest electric provider says it’s making changes to a program that helps low-income families with their utility bills.
PNM says its shareholders have contributed an additional $500,000 to PNM’s Good Neighbor Fund. That’s in addition to the shareholders’ usual gift of $350,000 each year.
Officials say the money will help reach more customers who can’t afford their electricity bills due to unforeseen emergency circumstances.
PNM is also changing qualification guidelines so that extenuating circumstances can be considered.
The program is funded by customer donations as well as shareholder funding. In 2013, the fund provided nearly $300,000 to families in need.
