HOUSTON (AP) - Authorities say more than 200,000 pounds of oil-soaked sand and debris have been removed from Texas shorelines two weeks after a collision in the Houston Ship Channel.
The U.S. Coast Guard reported Saturday that nearly 500 workers remain on clean-up duty following the March 22 accident. Investigators say a collision between a ship and barge dumped nearly 170,000 gallons of oil into the waters.
Crews have recovered dozens of dead birds and hundreds others covered in oil. The Coast Guard on Saturday posted a video showing three of the first rehabbed birds being returned to the wild.
Investigators are still trying to determine how and why the accident occurred.
