RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) - Vermont State Police say a couple attempted to smuggle drugs into the Marble Valley Correctional Facility by attaching them to a baby.

Police say during their investigation they learned that inmate 26-year-old Gregory Munukka contacted his girlfriend, 25-year-old Michelle Doaner, about obtaining buprenorphine for him.

Police said they decided the drug would be attached to their 1-year-old child so Munukka could receive the drugs on a scheduled visit to the prison on March 31.

Prison officials searched Munukka afterward and found drugs. New York Child Protective Services have been notified.

Munukka is charged with narcotics possession. Doaner, of Whitehall, N.Y., is facing drug charges and a child cruelty charge.

Both are scheduled to appear in court in May. It couldn’t be immediately determined if they had attorneys.
