BELHAVEN, N.C. (AP) - A hospital operator is providing $1 million and will help search for new managers as a rural North Carolina community works to keep its local hospital open.
Belhaven and Vidant Health Systems hope their new efforts and combined $3 million will keep the hospital open beyond July.
Greenville-based Vidant Health officials said in September they would close the hospital by next month, in part because North Carolina lawmakers refused federal funding to expand Medicaid. Vidant CEO Dr. David Herman says the hospital has provided more than $2 million in unpaid health care since 2011, when Vidant took it over.
The new agreement says if the Beaufort County Commissioners come up with $2 million, Vidant will provide technical support and $1 million for the next three months of operations.
