NEW YORK (AP) - The 92nd Street Y has named a technology advocate and the first non-Jew to lead the 140-year-old institution.

Henry Timms, an Episcopalian, joined the Y five years ago. Mostly recently he served as interim executive director.

He has launched a series of initiatives at the Y using technology to reach a broader audience.

The 92nd Street Y is a Jewish cultural and community center on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. It hosts a prominent series of talks, readings and concerts.

In 2012, Timms created #GivingTuesday which promotes charitable giving on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.

The Wall Street Journal (https://on.wsj.com/1iC9tTB ) says the Y also on Tuesday appointed Peter J. Rubinstein to oversee the Y’s Jewish programming and serve as its spiritual leader. Rubinstein is senior rabbi at Manhattan’s Central Synagogue.
