Ahead of a Senate vote on increasing the federal minimum wage, President Obama Wednesday hailed the legislature in Hawaii for raising the state minimum wage to $10.10 per hour and called on congressional Republicans to follow suit.
“The Hawaii Legislature did the right thing for their workers,” Mr. Obama said in a statement. “I urge Republicans in Congress to follow Hawaii’s lead and lift wages for 28 million Americans.”
The Senate will hold a vote later Wednesday on raising the federal minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10 per hour, a proposal that Mr. Obama has been pushing all year.
“With a Senate vote on this crucial issue planned for today, it’s time for Republicans in Congress to listen to the majority of Americans who say it’s time to give America a raise,” the president said.
