BALTIMORE (AP) - A Maryland high school teacher has been named the 2014 National Teacher of the Year.

The Council of Chief State School Officers announced the honor Wednesday for Sean McComb of Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts in Baltimore County. The organization says McComb will be recognized by President Barack Obama in a ceremony at the White House on Thursday.

McComb has spent his eight-year teaching career at Patapsco, where he developed the school’s Advancement via Individual Determination program, a mentor-based college preparatory program. He also supports colleagues through coaching and training as the school’s staff development teacher. McComb has also served as a curriculum writer for the school system and an adjunct instructor in education and writing at Towson University.
