JENNINGS, La. (AP) - A new Jefferson Davis Parish jail could be built on a 17-acre site on U.S. 90, just west of Jennings.
The American Press reports (https://bit.ly/1eOXZNb ) the police jury announced plans Tuesday to buy the undeveloped commercial property for the proposed 200-bed parish jail.
Ronnie Petree, chairman of the Citizens Committee for a Safer Jefferson Davis Parish, said an agreement has been signed with Earline Evans Angelle, a representative of the Earl Evans Inc. estate, to sell 17.02 acres of land to the parish for $272,320, or about $16,000 per acre.
Petree says the site was selected because it is in a sparsely populated area, has some infrastructure in place, including water and sewage lines, and is within five miles of the parish courthouse.
