WHEATON, Ill. (AP) - A former police officer from suburban Chicago has been sentenced to 26 years in prison for his role in selling drugs that were seized from street dealers.

Thirty-year-old Matthew Hudak is the second former Schaumburg police officer sentenced to prison over the drug ring. A case against a third former officer is pending.

Hudak pleaded guilty to unlawful delivery of a controlled substance, official misconduct, burglary and armed violence.

DuPage County prosecutors say he and the other ex-officers routinely confiscated drugs from dealers, then sold some of their haul through other street dealers and divided up the proceeds.

Jack Riley is a special agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration.

He says, “The public rightfully expects police officers to protect them from drug dealers, not go into business with them.”
