PHOENIX (AP) - A bill requiring an external review of the state’s embattled child welfare agency has been vetoed by Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer.

Brewer vetoed Senate Bill 1386 on Wednesday, saying issues regarding the state’s child welfare agency should be part of a comprehensive overhaul the Legislature will soon take up in a special session.

The bill would have appropriated $250,000 for the review.

Brewer pulled Children’s Protective Services from the Department of Economic Security in January after authorities discovered about 6,600 child-abuse and neglect cases that weren’t investigated between late 2009 and last November. Six officials involved in the cases were fired last week.

She appointed the director of the state juvenile corrections department to lead the new agency.

Brewer noted will have an annual outside review and an inspections bureau.
