SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) - Police in Springfield, Ore., say they have arrested a man accused of arming himself with a hammer and pick ax and chasing two women walking past his house. Police say one woman was hit by the ax and injured.

Police say 34-year-old Thomas Robert Murphy was arrested Tuesday for investigation of attempted murder, menacing, physical harassment, criminal mischief and reckless endangering.

The injured woman was taken to a hospital. Her condition was not immediately known.

One woman called 911 to report the attack. Police say the armed man used the ax to knock the phone away.

A police statement says neither Lynette Sellers nor Katherine Miller knew the man.
