NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - An Essex County corrections officer convicted of beating a female inmate has been sentenced to five years in prison.

Carlton Clark was found guilty in February of aggravated assault and official misconduct in the beating, which was captured on a jailhouse video camera.

Jail cameras showed the 40-year-old guard punching 20-year-old Emirlene Philemon in the head after returning her to her cell from a trip to the medical unit in 2011.

The defense claimed the inmate had swung first and the officer had been attempting to prevent a riot.

Clark was sentenced Thursday in state Superior Court in Newark.

His attorney, Anthony Iacullo, told The Star-Ledger (https://bit.ly/1mNchoz ) he intends to appeal February’s jury verdict.
