MAQUOKETA, Iowa (AP) - Authorities say an autopsy shows a man killed himself after exchanging gunfire with a Maquoketa police officer.
The Department of Public Safety announced Thursday that an autopsy by the State Medical Examiner performed Wednesday determined Aaron Edward Scott died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The death has been certified as a suicide.
Scott traded shots early Tuesday with Sgt. Brendan Zeimet after the office checked on a pickup truck in Maquoketa.
Scott emerged from the pickup with a rifle, hitting Zeimet in the left forearm. Zeimet was treated at a hospital and released.
Scott fled in the pickup, which was found crashed a short time later. Officers found Scott dead inside.
The autopsy showed Scott had been shot by Zeimet in the leg. That injury wasn’t life-threatening.
