JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - The Alaska Senate has passed legislation that would criminalize the cyberbullying of a minor.
SB128 would classify as second-degree harassment repeatedly sending taunting or intimidating electronic messages to a minor in a way that causes “severe mental or emotional injury” or makes that person fearful of physical injury.
The bill, from Sen. Kevin Meyer, passed 19-0. It next goes to the House.
Meyer, in a statement, said in some extreme cases, electronic bullying has led to suicide. He said his bill would provide more power to stop bullies and protect children from a harmful “cycle of aggression.”
